Spring 1

English

This term we will be reading the following:

In English we will be reading ‘Stone Age Boy' by Mick Manning. About a boy who travels back in time to the era of the Stone Age. We will be writing an adventure story, focusing on prepositional phrases and subordinate clauses. We will also read a poem about Stonehenge. The children will then write their own poem using rhythm and actions about a place that they have previously visited.

We encourage you to read any books you have at home or ones that you can access online. Please record the books you read in your reading record.

Reading skills we need to strengthen:

  • Prediction – Using evidence from the text to suggest what might happen next e.g. I think he might run off because it says in the text 'he looked nervously at all of the exits'.
  • Author/Illustrator - Find who wrote the book and who created the pictures
  • Vocabulary - Pick out key words, what do they mean? e.g. what does the word 'conflicted' mean? Read the sentence to help you make sense of the word.
  • Retrieve - Ask questions within the story where children have to find the information to give you an answer e.g. how many bears were there in the story, can you find where it says the answer?

Have a look at the VIPERS poster below. This will help you understand what skills the children need when reading in KS2.

Book review - We encourage all children to either write a book review or record a video of their book review on seesaw.
