Our Year 3 Reading Week

Still image for this video
This week the children have been learning all about Malaysia and reading the story 'Kaya's Heart Song' by Diwa Tharan Sanders. The children have been creating their own version of their heart songs.

Seesaw Introduction

We will be using Seesaw as part of our school learning. Click the link below the video to access the site.

Autumn 1

English

This term we will be reading the following:

  • 'Kaya's Heart Song' written by Diwa Tharan Sanders
  • 'The Iron Man' written by Ted Hughes
  • 'Humanoid Robot' - a video link found on Literacy Shed
  • SPaG - noun phrases
  • SPaG - adjectives and similies

We encourage you to read any books you have at home or ones that you can access online. There are suggestions below for online reading...

Reading skills we need to strengthen:

  • Prediction – Using evidence from the text to suggest what might happen next e.g. I think he might run off because it says in the text 'he looked nervously at all of the exits'.
  • Author/Illustrator - Find who wrote the book and who created the pictures
  • Vocabulary - Pick out key words, what do they mean? e.g. what does the word 'conflicted' mean? Read the sentence to help you make sense of the word.
  • Retrieve - Ask questions within the story where children have to find the information to give you an answer e.g. how many bears were there in the story, can you find where it says the answer?

Have a look at the VIPERS poster below. This will help you understand what skills the children need when reading in KS2.

Book review - We encourage all children to either write a book review or record a video of their book review on seesaw.
