Equality

Djanogly Sherwood Academy – Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

At Djanogly Sherwood Academy, true inclusion goes beyond simply welcoming diversity – it is the foundation of our curriculum, our daily routines, and our school culture. Driven by our commitment to global learning and responsive pastoral care, we are building a school where every child, family, and staff member feels a profound sense of belonging and respect.

Our Commitment and Vision

Upholding the Equality Act 2010 is our baseline, ensuring protection against discrimination across all protected characteristics (Age, Disability, Gender reassignment, Marriage and civil partnership, Pregnancy and maternity, Race, Religion or belief, Sex, and Sexual orientation). But our vision stretches further. We proactively design our systems, teaching methods, and community partnerships to eliminate barriers and advance true equality of opportunity.

Knowing Our Community

Our equality strategy is never generic; it is built on a clear, data-driven understanding of the vibrant community we serve. By utilising our management information systems, we continuously monitor our demographic landscape to shape our pastoral and academic support.

Our Strategic Equality Priorities

Rather than viewing equality as a standalone checklist, we weave it into our core operational and improvement strategies.

Championing Global Citizenship

We are embedding diverse global perspectives across all subjects. By ensuring our curriculum intent includes diverse literature and international viewpoints, every child sees their own heritage celebrated while learning to respect the wider world.

Systems for Success and Wellbeing

We are committed to reducing inequalities in behaviour and attendance through clear, consistent frameworks. By focusing on positive reinforcement and trauma-informed pastoral care, we ensure all pupils, especially those with SEND or from disadvantaged backgrounds, feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.

Adaptive Teaching by Design

We are continuously refining our teaching strategies to ensure lessons are accessible to everyone. This means proactive support pathways for our EAL learners and rigorous, adaptive pedagogy for our SEND pupils, ensuring no child is left behind.

Empowering Every Voice

We are strengthening our family partnerships by ensuring our communication is accessible, multilingual, and transparent. From visual, child-friendly flowcharts to regular community feedback loops, we want our families to feel actively involved in school life.

How We Bring This to Life

  • In the Classroom: Integration of global learning themes, diverse role models, and regular celebrations of our community’s varied cultures.

  • Beyond the Classroom: Restorative behaviour approaches, targeted attendance mentoring, and inclusive lunchtime provisions. WEB group (Where Everyone Belongs)

  • Our Team: Ongoing, high-quality professional development for all staff focusing on cultural competence and workload-friendly systems thinking.

Measuring Our Impact

Equality is an ongoing journey. We quality-assure our practices through monitoring by the Senior Leadership Team, annual reviews with our governing body, and, most importantly, through the lived experiences shared in our pupil voice and parent surveys.
